# Template cards

By default new cards are formatted from scratch. With **Settings > Use template cards** enabled, new cards are instead copied from a template file you provide. Use this to give every new card the same starting content, for example a FreeMCBoot install or a set of cheat files.

Place the templates at exactly these paths and sizes:

| Path                                | Size              |
| ----------------------------------- | ----------------- |
| `/PS1/Templates/Template_128kb.mcd` | 131,072 bytes     |
| `/PS2/Templates/Template_8mb.mc2`   | 8,388,608 bytes   |
| `/PS2/Templates/Template_16mb.mc2`  | 16,777,216 bytes  |
| `/PS2/Templates/Template_32mb.mc2`  | 33,554,432 bytes  |
| `/PS2/Templates/Template_64mb.mc2`  | 67,108,864 bytes  |
| `/PS2/Templates/Template_128mb.mc2` | 134,217,728 bytes |

Only the sizes you use need a template. A template of the wrong size shows **Template is the wrong size.** and a missing one shows **Template could not be opened.**

The `Templates` folder is skipped when cycling through cards and in the WebUI card list.

{% hint style="info" %}
The easiest way to make a template is to set up a card the way you want it, then copy its channel-1 file to the template path.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://8bitmods.gitbook.io/manuals/virtual-memory-cards/template-cards.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
