# SD card layout

Everything lives in plain folders and files, so you can copy, back up and edit cards from a PC.

```
/PS1/<Card>/<Card>-1.mcd      channel 1 (128 KB)
/PS1/<Card>/<Card>-2.mcd      channel 2, and so on up to -8
/PS1/<Card>/name.txt          display name
/PS2/<Card>/<Card>-1.mc2      channel 1 (8 to 128 MB)
/PS2/<Card>/name.txt
/PS2/<Card>/mapped.txt        only for linked cards
/PS1/Templates/               optional template cards
/PS2/Templates/
/os/webui/index.html          Local WebUI
/recent.txt                   recently played games
/topgames.txt                 play counts
/mcp2.bin                     firmware update, deleted after flashing
```

`<Card>` is the folder name, either `MemoryCardN` or a game ID such as `SLUS-20946`.

## Channel files

Channel files are created on demand the first time a channel is selected, so a folder may contain fewer than 8 files.

## Importing existing cards

Copy a raw `.mcd` (PS1, 128 KB) or `.mc2` (PS2, 8 to 128 MB) image into a new folder and name it `<Folder>-1.mcd` or `<Folder>-1.mc2`. Formats from other tools that add headers, such as `.mcr` or `.ps2` with extra bytes, must be converted to raw images first.

## name.txt

A one-line text file holding the name shown on the display and in the WebUI. It is created automatically from the built-in title database when a folder is first seen. Edit it, or use **Edit Name** in the WebUI, to change it.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://8bitmods.gitbook.io/manuals/virtual-memory-cards/sd-card-layout.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
