# Cards and channels

A **virtual memory card (VMC)** is a folder on your storage that behaves like a physical memory card. You can have as many as your storage holds.

Every card has **8 channels**. Each channel is a completely separate memory card image, so one game can have up to 8 independent sets of saves. The console only ever sees the currently selected channel.

## Switching cards and channels

* Tap **Left** or **Right** to change channel.
* Hold **Right** to mount the next card.
* Use **Menu > Load Boot VMC** to return to your boot card.
* Use the [WebUI](/manuals/wireless/webui.md) to mount any card by name.

Switching a card while a game is running looks to the console like pulling the card out and inserting another one. Do this from a menu screen, not while the game is saving.

## Naming

Cards created from the device are named `MemoryCard1`, `MemoryCard2` and so on. Cards created by GameID are named after the game's ID, for example `SLUS-20946`, and show the game's title on the display. You can rename any card from the WebUI.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://8bitmods.gitbook.io/manuals/virtual-memory-cards/cards-and-channels.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
