# Loading games from the SD card

MMCE (Memory Card Emulator) is a protocol that lets PS2 homebrew read and write the device's storage through the memory card port. With an MMCE-aware loader you can play games from the same microSD card that holds your saves, with no USB drive, hard disk or network share.

## Requirements

* A PS2 loader with MMCE support: [OPL](https://github.com/ps2homebrew/Open-PS2-Loader) 1.2.0 or later, or [Neutrino](https://github.com/rickgaiser/neutrino).
* A fast microSD card, Class 10 / A1 or better. Game loading speed is limited by the memory card port, so faster cards give diminishing returns.
* A boot card with the loader installed, or FreeMCBoot to launch it.

## How it works

The loader opens files on the device's storage exactly as it would on a USB drive. Game folders and files are placed on the storage following the loader's own layout, for example `/DVD` and `/CD` for OPL.

While a game is streaming, the display pauses updates and buttons are ignored, because the memory card port is busy.

## Combining MMCE with GameID

MMCE loaders send the game ID before launching, so GameID switches to the game's card and the game then loads from the storage. Both features work together on any card size.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://8bitmods.gitbook.io/manuals/mmce/overview.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
