# Preparing storage

MemCard PRO2 needs a microSD card or a USB drive. The microSD card is checked first; if none is found, the device tries to mount a USB drive.

## microSD card

1. Format the card with the [SD Association formatter](https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/). FAT32 and exFAT are supported.
2. Download the latest firmware package from the [8BitMods downloads page](https://distribution.appcake.co.uk/install/8bitmods/apps/memcard-pro2/public).
3. Copy `mcp2.bin` and the `os` folder to the root of the card.
4. Insert the card and power on. The firmware is flashed on first boot.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Use a Class 10 / A1 or faster card. Slower cards work for 8 MB cards but struggle with larger PS2 cards and with MMCE game loading. If a card is unreliable, try **Menu > SD Mode > Compat (slower)**.
{% endhint %}

## USB drive

A USB drive can be used instead of a microSD card. It must be:

* formatted with an MBR partition table and a FAT32 or exFAT partition
* externally powered, or plugged in through a powered hub, since the console's memory card slot cannot power most drives

The `os` folder and firmware file go in the root of the drive, exactly as for the microSD card.

## Files the device creates

On first boot the device creates the `PS1` and `PS2` folders and the first virtual memory card. See [SD card layout](/manuals/virtual-memory-cards/sd-card-layout.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://8bitmods.gitbook.io/manuals/getting-started/preparing-storage.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
