# First boot

1. Insert the prepared storage and plug the device into a PS1 or PS2 memory card slot.
2. If a firmware file is present, the display shows **Updating Firmware...** with a progress bar and the device restarts.
3. The device boots in PS2 mode by default and creates a card named **MemoryCard1**. The display shows the boot logo and **Loading...** while the card is prepared.
4. The main screen appears. The scrolling text is the current card or game name, `Ch:1` is the channel.

The device is now usable. Everything else is optional:

* [Set up Wi-Fi](/manuals/wireless/wifi-setup.md) to manage cards from a browser.
* [Enable GameID](/manuals/gameid/overview.md) support in your loader to switch cards automatically.

## If nothing is found

If the display shows **Can't find SD or USB device! Please plug in storage.**, check that the card is fully inserted and formatted as described in [Preparing storage](/manuals/getting-started/preparing-storage.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://8bitmods.gitbook.io/manuals/getting-started/first-boot.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
