# Buttons and the menu

## On the main screen

| Action                                                             | Result                           |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------ | -------------------------------- |
| Tap Left                                                           | Previous channel                 |
| Tap Right                                                          | Next channel                     |
| Hold Left, release when the screen says **Release for Main Menu** | Open the menu |
| Hold Right, release when the screen says **Release for Next Card** | Mount the next card |
| Hold both buttons and release | Open the menu (alternative) |
| Hold Right while powering on | Open the [boot menu](#boot-menu) |

Channels wrap around: after channel 8 comes channel 1. Buttons are ignored while the display shows **Writing...**.

While a cloud backup is running, any press shows **Cloud Busy! Hold to cancel**. Holding a button cancels the backup.

## Navigating menus

* **Left** moves the cursor `>` down one item. The list wraps around at the bottom.
* **Right** selects the highlighted item.
* Menus close automatically if the console starts writing to the card.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://8bitmods.gitbook.io/manuals/getting-started/buttons-and-menu.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
