# How GameID works

GameID lets the device recognise which game is running and mount that game's own virtual memory card automatically. Each game gets a folder named after its ID, for example `SLUS-20946`, created the first time the game is seen.

## What happens when a game is detected

1. The loader or console tells the device the game ID.
2. If GameID is enabled for the current mode, the device mounts the card named after the ID, channel 1, creating it if needed.
3. The display shows the game's title from the built-in database, and the ID in the bottom left corner.
4. If the game is a PS1 title and the device is in PS2 mode, it switches to PS1 mode.
5. When the ID is empty, for example when returning to the loader, the device mounts the boot card.

## Where the ID comes from

| Console | Source                                                                                  | Page                                 |
| ------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ |
| PS1     | Optical drive emulators, Unirom, FreePSXBoot, tonyhax, modified BIOS                    | [PS1 GameID](/manuals/gameid/ps1.md) |
| PS2     | MMCE-aware loaders (OPL, Neutrino), or the PS2's own launch history on the mounted card | [PS2 GameID](/manuals/gameid/ps2.md) |

## Turning it off

GameID is on by default for both modes. Disable **Enable GameID** for PS1 or PS2 under **Settings** to keep the current card mounted regardless of what is running.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://8bitmods.gitbook.io/manuals/gameid/overview.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
