# Updating the firmware

Dongle firmware files are named `bitlink-dongle-<version>b<build>.bin`, for example `bitlink-dongle-1.0.1b412.bin`. Adapter files do not work on the dongle.

## From the WebUI

You need Chrome or Edge on a computer, and a USB-C cable.

1. Connect to the WebUI and select **Config > System > Firmware Update > Update**.
2. Choose the firmware file and select **Restart into update mode**.
3. Connect the dongle to the computer with a USB-C cable.
4. Select **Select device and flash** and choose **BitLink Dongle DFU**.
5. Wait for **Complete**. The dongle restarts with the new firmware.

## With dfu-util

1. Start update mode. See [Update mode and recovery](/manuals/bitlink-dc-dongle/firmware/recovery.md).
2. Run `dfu-util -a 0 -D bitlink-dongle-1.0.1b412.bin`.

{% hint style="info" %}
Do not disconnect the dongle while it is writing. If an update is interrupted, see [Update mode and recovery](/manuals/bitlink-dc-dongle/firmware/recovery.md).
{% endhint %}

No driver is needed on Windows. The current version is shown on the WebUI **Connect** page.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://8bitmods.gitbook.io/manuals/bitlink-dc-dongle/firmware/updating.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
