# Virtual memory cards

The dongle stores four virtual memory cards (VMCs) in internal storage. Each card is the size of a standard VMU (128 KB). The Dreamcast sees the mounted card as a VMU in the controller's first slot.

* Card 1 is mounted when the dongle starts.
* To change cards, select a card on the WebUI **VMU** page and select **Mount**. With the BitLink DC Adapter, you can also press its Sync button.
* Saves are written to internal storage about a second after the game stops writing. Wait a moment after saving before you unplug the dongle.

If a VMU is plugged into a controller fitted with the BitLink DC Adapter, the console uses that VMU instead of the virtual cards.

To back up, restore or copy saves, see [Memory card manager](/manuals/bitlink-dc-dongle/webui/memory-cards.md).

## Notes

* The virtual cards are not available while a keyboard or mouse is connected. See [Keyboards and mice](/manuals/bitlink-dc-dongle/inputs/keyboards-and-mice.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://8bitmods.gitbook.io/manuals/bitlink-dc-dongle/features/memory-cards.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
